Small Wedding at Perth Registry Office with Laura and James

I love a tiny wee wedding and they don’t come any smaller than this! Laura and James emailed me just a few ago.  They had planned a very small (two friends as witnesses), low key, Monday morning Registry office wedding in Perth before their baby is born.  No wedding cars, flowers or fuss and no Photos.  Thankfully they had a change of heart about the latter and decided a few photos for the family to see might be nice so they booked me for just an hour and this is what happened….. James and Laura exchanged vows in front of their two witnesses. The words in a small ceremony always feel very powerful, I think it is the lack of noise and distraction in the room but it was a moving experience and the congratulations that followed were sweet….  After the ceremony, this party of four (five if you include the baby bump) planned to go to Malmaison in Dundee for lunch so we decided to have a fairly casual photo shoot on the walk back to the car park! The Registry Office in Perth is next to the River which makes a great backdrop for photos.  We were lucky enough to get sunshine in January too!  There are some beautiful old buildings in Perth (that is the Courthouse in the photo above!) so we wandered along, having a chat and a few stops on the way.  The atmosphere was calm and cheerful as we said or goodbyes. I got some lovely feedback from them too:

“The whole day was just as we wanted it to go. We can’t believe how great they turned out, such a fantastic set of photos! We can’t thank you enough for capturing our special day so perfectly.”

Congratulations to Laura and James x

Are you are planning your own small wedding and think professional photos will be too much fuss or expensive?  Please remember that when the day is over, photos are your only tangible memories, without them the moments of love and happiness will fade with time.  The photography doesn’t have to be posed and it doesn’t have to last all day.  All the photos you see here were captured in one hour!

St Andrews Old Course Wedding with Dawn and Danny

St Andrews Old Course Hotel weddings are always special, so I was excited to be booked as Dawn and Danny’s Photographer.  St Peter and Paul’s RC Church in Dundee was the starting place for the ceremony on this freezing but sunny day in December.  Dawn arrived looking amazing in her dress, I loved this bouquet as well…. Danny had a wee wait for his Bride and was looking a bit nervous by the time she arrived….. It was a lovely ceremony led by Mgr Ken, made extra special by the Primary School class Dawn teaches who came to sing and do some readings during their Christmas holidays 🙂 The other love of Danny and Dawn’s lives, their doggy, Stella came to congratulate her Mum and Dad and have some photos taken.  Anyone who knows me will know how happy I was about this moment!  I love Stella’s happy face here <3  The next stop was the beautiful Old Course Hotel in St Andrews for the wedding reception.  It was so cold the pond in the garden was totally frozen over, Dawn braved the weather in her lacy sleeves for the sake of good photos though, she is my kind of girl! We managed to avoid the flying golf balls for a few photos on the Swilken Bridge too! Time to get cosy in the bar and enjoy the drinks reception….  The decor was really lovely and tied in perfectly with their colour scheme, they named their tables after gins 🙂  Plenty of laughs during some great speeches by Dawn’s Dad, Danny and his Best Man…  The evening guests arrived after dinner and the band got the party started in style! Congratulations Mr & Mrs Albayati! X

Forgan’s St Andrews Wedding with Natalie and Dunc

BACK TO MAIN WEBSITE  I had my first 2017 wedding last week and what a way to kick off the year!  This was a special wedding for me as it was my gorgeous school friend Natalie marrying her High School sweetheart Duncan 🙂 They have a great modern love story as they met and dated at school, lost touch, met again through Facebook a few years ago and now are happily married! I started the day by meeting the boys in The Rule where they were having a few drinks before walking along to the Registry Office where the ceremony was being held.  The Registry office is part of St Andrews Town Hall, a lovely old building in the centre of town.  Natalie arrived by car with her Dad and Bridal Party including some very cute flower girls….  Natalie’s son had the important job of Ring bearer and Dunc’s daughter read a very cute story to all of the guests….  We gathered all the guests for a group photo before they left for the reception at Forgans. We had a quick stop along the way for a photos outside Madras College, the school we all went to back when Natalie and Duncan were first dating <3  This was the first time I’d photographed at Forgans and was really impressed at how well it works as a wedding venue.  It has a unique style that looks great in photos and a relaxed, warm atmosphere.   I loved all of the details around the venue!  After the speeches a Caricaturist drew all of the guests during the meal…..  Once the evening guests had arrived, the dancing started.  They had a Ceilidh band to teach their English guests some traditional Scottish dances ….  Congratulations to all four of you!  Wishing you a very happy future and lots of love xxx

Winter Weddings – Top Tips for Perfect Photos

Winter can be a beautiful time of year to get married… the chance of snow, warm fireplaces, berry colours and winter wonderland décor can all make your day magical.  However, winter can also bring bad weather, dark days and cold conditions so there are a few factors you should take into consideration when photographing your special day…

1. Pick a venue with a great interior – your venue will be your starting point for booking your day. Venues with grounds for photos are greats, but remember your guests will be inside most of the day and if there is a blizzard outside, you are likely to have most of your photos indoors. A venue with features like a big staircase, fireplaces, big windows and plenty of space will give you variety in your photos.Balbirnie House Hotel Wedding Photography Fife Scotland Photographer Karen Jackson_0257Balbirnie House Hotel in Fife has a great staircase for indoor photos.

2. Choose your ceremony time wisely – daylight is limited in winter, the average UK ceremony time is 2pm, but it is almost dark at that time during winter time.  Often couples will opt for an earlier time in the hope that they can have some photos outside before it gets dark. This website gives sunset times for your town and different times of the year – www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/uk/london2This photo was taken at 2:25pm in December, just as the sun was starting to set on the bandstand at Magdalen Green, Dundee.

3. Pick a photographer with winter wedding photography experience – the dark conditions of winter are a big challenge for a wedding photographer, we have to create our own light in the photos. This can look amazing if it is used correctly… or terrible if not! Ask potential photographers to show you samples of their previous winter weddings, preferably from your chosen venue, throughout the whole day. A photographer may have a great portfolio of summer weddings taken in natural daylight but this doesn’t guarantee they have the capability to do your winter wedding justice.3

4. Dress for the weather -if you plan to go outside for photos or are travelling between venues, remember it will be freezing, especially in a sleeveless dress. Faux fur stoles or jackets for you and your bridesmaids always look good and will stop your skin turning blue! When you’re picking your wedding dress, keep in mind that a long dress with a train is likely to get wet outside in winter.4

5. Footwear and accessories – your wedding shoes might also get wet and muddy outside in winter so if you do plan to be outside, bringing something more practical is a good idea, like wellies or boots. You can make a feature of these or hide them depending on the length of your dress. If it is raining or snowing you will also need an umbrella. There are lots of online stores selling wellies and umbrellas specifically for weddings.5This is the same bride as in the second photo, she had some cosy Ugg boots hidden under her dress to walk over the wet grass 🙂

6. First Look? – if you don’t like the idea of an earlier ceremony so you can get photographs in daylight, it may be worth considering a ‘first look’ session.  This is when you have your couple photos outdoor before the ceremony and so, get a ‘first look’ at one another.  Although this breaks the tradition of the Bride and Groom not seeing each other before the wedding, these are becoming increasingly popular with the rise of the winter wedding.

30% of annual weddings in the UK are now Winter Weddings so hopefully these tips will help you get the most out of yours!

Kelly & Ben’s Wedding, Lower and Upper College Halls, St Andrews, Fife

On Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting Kelly and Ben’s wedding.  The weather was a bit wild so we were mainly indoors, luckily we had a beautiful venue which is part of St Andrews University.  Kelly and Ben met on a train so had chosen a vintage, train theme which looked fantastic along with their colour scheme.  Here are a few highlights of the day:

Alison & Danny at Balbirnie House Hotel

Yesterday I had the pleasure of shooting Alison and Danny’s wedding at Balbirnie.  It was a sunny winter’s day with a snow/sleet/rain shower half way through the group shots… luckily Balbirnie has plenty of picturesque spots inside as well as outside!  The day had a lovely atmosphere and was full of personal touches including origami flowers, a coffee van to keep the guests warm, a Tunnocks teacake tower for the cake and a gramophone DJ to name a few.
